Currently Reception to Y11 (up to Y13 in SEN Schools)

Nasal Flu Vaccination for children is offered routinely in school.

Flu is a highly infectious illness that spreads rapidly through the coughs and sneezes of people who are carrying the virus. Flu symptoms can hit quite suddenly and severely and can be very unpleasant for children. They usually include fever, chills, headaches and aching muscles. You can often get a cough and sore throat. Some children develop a very high fever or complications of flu such as bronchitis, pneumonia and painful middle ear infection. They may need hospital treatment, and very occasionally a child may die from flu.

Children of school age (currently up to Year 11) are offered the flu vaccination through a simple spray up each nostril. It is painless, very quick and serious side effects are uncommon.

Further information explaining the programme can be found on the right hand side of this page and gives answers to some commonly asked questions about flu and the vaccination. This information includes details about children for whom nasal spray is not appropriate.

You may be aware that the nasal flu vaccine contains gelatine derived from pigs (porcine). Gelatine is commonly used in a range of pharmaceutical products. You may require further information before making a decision about whether or not you are happy for your child to receive this vaccine. If you decide to refuse the nasal flu vaccine due to the porcine gelatine content an alternative injection can be offered.

To give consent/non consent for the Nasal Flu vaccination please click on the "Complete consent form" button and complete and submit the online form.

If, after submitting a consent form, you book for your child to be vaccinated by the GP or you change your mind about consent you MUST contact the Immunisation Team on 01484 368500 to inform us of your descision.

For any consented child that is absent from school on the day of vaccination the Team will be making a followup visit to each school.
